TL;DR: How to get cited by ChatGPT in Singapore: the five moves that earn AI citations, real timelines (days for buyer-intent queries, months for head terms), and what AEO honestly cannot do.
To get cited by ChatGPT in Singapore, you need three things: a website that AI crawlers can actually read, pages that answer specific buyer questions directly (with the answer in the first paragraph, proper headings and FAQ schema), and consistent third-party corroboration — directories, reviews and mentions that let the AI verify you are real. Do this against specific buyer-intent queries and citations can arrive within days. Chase broad "best agency in Singapore" head terms and you are looking at months of structural work. That difference — and how to work it — is what this guide covers.
What "getting cited" actually means
When someone asks ChatGPT "who can set up a CRM for my SME in Singapore?", it does not return ten blue links. It names two or three businesses, sometimes one. Being one of those names is a citation. Being absent means you do not exist in that conversation — and unlike a Google ranking, there is no page two to fall back to.
The same mechanics apply across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude. They differ in training data and retrieval, but they all reward the same underlying signals: clarity about what you do, structure they can extract from, and evidence from sources other than your own website. The discipline of engineering those signals is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO).
Why ChatGPT is not citing you today
In our audits of Singapore and Malaysia SMEs, the same blockers come up repeatedly:
- AI crawlers are locked out. Many sites block GPTBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot in robots.txt without knowing it — the engines literally cannot read the content.
- No extractable answers. The site says "we help businesses grow" instead of "we set up WhatsApp CRM systems for Singapore SMEs from $X". AI cannot cite vague copy.
- No structure. No FAQ schema, no clear headings, no direct question-and-answer format. AI engines quote passages; if there is nothing quotable, you are skipped.
- No corroboration. If your own website is the only place that mentions your business, that is a weak signal. Engines triangulate across directories, reviews and third-party pages.
The five moves that earn citations
1. Let the crawlers in
Check robots.txt and explicitly allow GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. Then confirm the site is indexable at all — a surprising number of production sites carry a leftover noindex. This is a 15-minute fix and nothing else works without it.
2. Target buyer-intent queries, not head terms
This is the highest-leverage decision. "Best marketing agency Singapore" is a head term — every engine already has entrenched answers, and displacing them takes sustained structural work. "How much does [your specific service] cost in Singapore" or "[your service] vs [alternative] for F&B businesses" are buyer-intent queries — specific questions with few good existing answers. In our citation tracking, specific buyer-intent queries get cited within days of publishing; generic "best X" head terms take structural work over months. Start where the engines are hungry for answers.
3. Answer in the first paragraph
Each target query gets a page whose opening paragraph answers it directly — no throat-clearing, no "in today's digital landscape". Then supporting sections with clear H2/H3 headings, concrete numbers where you have them, and a short FAQ. This mirrors how answer engines assemble responses: they lift the passage that answers the question, and they prefer the one that does it cleanly.
4. Mark it up
Add FAQPage and Organization schema so engines know exactly what each block of content is. Publish an llms.txt file listing your key pages and knowledge content. Keep your name, address and phone identical across your site and Google Business Profile.
5. Corroborate off-site
Get listed on relevant directories, keep reviews flowing, and make sure your Google Business Profile is complete. Engines recommend businesses they can verify from multiple independent sources. This is slower work than the on-site fixes, but it is what separates "mentioned" from "recommended".
How fast does this work? Real numbers
AEO is new enough that most published claims are guesses. These are results from our own citation tracking, anonymised:
| What was done | What happened |
|---|---|
| A Malaysian F&B POS provider published ~5 targeted buyer-intent guides | Went from 0% to 60% AI citation rate in roughly 3 weeks |
| One comparison guide ("X vs Y" format) published on a client site | Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude within 6 days of publishing |
| Generic "best X" head-term targeting | No fast wins — these consistently require months of structural and authority work |
The pattern is consistent: the speed of results depends almost entirely on query selection. Comparison guides and specific how-much/how-to questions move fastest, because the engines have thin material to draw on and a well-structured page becomes the obvious source.
What AEO cannot do — an honest note
Anyone promising guaranteed placement in ChatGPT answers is selling something that does not exist. Being straight about the limits:
- No one controls the engines. AEO raises the probability of citation — sometimes dramatically — but ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google decide what they say, and their behaviour shifts between model updates. What works today may need adjusting in six months.
- Head terms are slow. If your only goal is to be the answer to "best [industry] in Singapore", expect months, not days, and no certainty.
- Measurement is younger than SEO's. There is no Search Console for AI citations yet. Tracking means systematically re-running your target queries across engines — doable, and we do it weekly, but it is sampling, not a full census.
- Citations are visibility, not revenue. If the enquiry lands on a slow site or an unmanned inbox, the citation is wasted. Visibility is the first step of a funnel, not the whole funnel.
- You cannot buy your way in. Ad spend has no effect on AI recommendations — the engines work from organic content, structure and third-party signals only.
Doing this in Singapore specifically
Singapore is a recommendation culture — people already ask colleagues and condo WhatsApp groups before they buy. AI search is that behaviour scaled up, and adoption here is moving quickly: IMDA data shows GenAI adoption among Singapore SMEs tripled from 4.2% to 14.5% in a single year. Meanwhile most local competitors have not touched AEO, which means buyer-intent queries in most industries are still wide open. The window will not stay open — early movers in SEO circa 2010 built positions that competitors still cannot displace, and AEO is at the same inflection point.
Where to start
First, find out where you stand: run the 5-minute ChatGPT visibility test against 5–10 real buyer questions. If you are invisible on most of them, work the five moves above in order — crawler access and query selection first, because they gate everything else. The Complete AEO Guide covers the full methodology.
If you would rather have it done for you: this is what we do, and we run the same playbook on our own site before we run it on anyone else's. Tell us what you run and we will scope it — if AEO is not the right answer for your business, we will say so.
